Indicator Light Meanings

We all hate it when a warning lights pops up when we start our cars. Some of these warnings can be minor, but other lights can indicate big problems. Here are some of the most common lights and what they mean. If you see any of these lights, contact the service department at Junction Buick GMC for a service appointment.

Check Engine

This may be the most dreaded warning light. When this comes on, you will need to get the problem diagnosed quickly. While it could be caused by something as simple as a loose or missing gas cap, it could also indicate much more serious trouble like a bad catalytic converter.

Oil Pressure Warning

If this light stays on after you start your engine, it means there is a loss of oil pressure. You should check your oil immediately.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System

If the system senses low tire pressure in any of your tires, this light will turn on. Check your tire pressure and refill with air, as needed.

Battery Alert

When the battery lights turns on, it means the voltage level is below normal settings. Check your battery terminals to make sure everything is clean and connected. You should also have your battery tested.

Coolant Temperature Warning

This light means the coolant temperature is too hot. Check your radiator cap and coolant level. Also make sure you don’t have any coolant leaks and the fan is operating correctly.

ABS

This light is for your anti-lock braking system. When it turns on, it means the system has set a code and needs to be professionally diagnosed.

Brake System

When you see this light, it could mean your parking brake is on, there is a problem with your ABS, or your brake fluid is low.

Traction Control or ESP

This light turns on when your vehicle’s traction control or electronic stability control system is in use. This usually happens when road conditions are slippery.
