When Should You Change Your Brakes?

How to Know When It's Time for Service

Regular brake service is an essential step in your ongoing vehicle maintenance process. Driving with brakes that are old, worn, or otherwise untrustworthy can be a danger to you, your passengers, other drivers, and pedestrians. Knowing when it’s time to get new brakes isn’t always obvious, but there are some signs you can look for.

Take a Look

Look at your brake pads through the spokes of your wheel. The pads should all be at least ¼ inch in thickness. If they look less than this, or anywhere close to less, it’s time for new pads.

Take a Listen

Listen carefully the next time you hit the brakes. Do you hear a high-pitched squeaking? That could be the shim, or indicator, telling you your brakes are worn. The shim is placed purposefully by the manufacturer to sound off when it’s time to change the pads.

Responsiveness

If it seems like you need to push harder on your brake pedal to achieve the same amount of stopping power, this could be an indication of a leak in your braking system. If you notice this decreased responsiveness, look for a puddle under your car next time you come to a long stop. This could be brake fluid, and is a sure-fire indication that you need to have your system repaired by a professional.

Vibrations

As you brake, you may feel a vibration in the pedal. This is definitely abnormal and requires immediate attention, as it could be a sign of a warped rotor. If you encounter this problem while driving, take your vehicle to a trained automotive technician.
