You’ve got your road trip stops all planned out, your bags are packed, and you’re ready to go — but what will you eat on the way? Eating out can add up fast, especially with a family, and the easiest options on the road tend not to be particularly healthy.

Luckily, there are myriad healthy snacks that are perfectly suited for road trips. For a bit of protein, bring along some jerky or a bag of nuts. Edamame, or soy beans, makes a great easy snack, too, and you can buy it dried for easier packing. If you add a small cooler to your packing list, things like cheese cubes or hummus and veggies are also great options.

Even if your taste leans towards the sweeter things, there are many foods you can bring with you that will help fill out your nutritional needs. Trail mix is easy to find and very customizable, whether it comes with raisins or chocolates. Or you can bring some dried fruit, which also offers a great variety of choices.

For salty options, bring a bag of popcorn or some pretzels. Crackers are a good idea, especially to go along with the cheese cubes — you can have your own travel charcuterie board!
